The Eastern Sierra Academy is a hands-on history summer camp in the Eastern Sierra Nevada for kids entering fourth and fifth grades. This week-long day camp focuses on a fun and experience-based introduction to the unique history and ecology of the area. The Academy is taught by knowledgeable teachers from the community and funded and run by the Clark Foundation. A volunteer Board of Advisors consults on the daily themes and structures of the camp, as well as advising regarding outreach and recruitment for the Academy. Learn more about our people here!
Location and Structure
In 2025, the Academy is scheduled for June 16 – 20th, running daily from 8:15 am to 4 pm. We will pick up the campers by bus from a location in downtown Bishop and travel either to our home base at Cardinal Village Resort or to one of our field trip destinations. A specific daily schedule will be provided to all campers at least a week before the Academy starts. Each day of the Academy will have a particular focus, so that campers finish the week having received a nuanced and comprehensive introduction to the history and ecology of the valley. From day to day, we may do everything from exploring how petroglyphs are made, investigating the many ways food has been produced in the area, or learning about mining and searching for precious metals – but you can be sure that every day will involve the opportunity to explore history in person.
Prices and Enrollment
The Eastern Sierra Academy is entirely funded by the Clark Foundation. Therefore, there is no fee charged to campers. Lunch and snacks will be provided, although we are unable to provide a vegetarian option at this time.
Enrollment proceeds on a first-come, first-served basis, with a few openings held in reserve for invited returning campers and in order to ensure the best camp experience for all. ESA 2025 is full. Please join our waitlist to be notified of any openings.
